A Grooming Guide

How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

The honest answer: it depends on the cut. Here's a simple guide by style, plus the signs you've waited too long.

There's no single right answer, but there is a right answer for your specific cut. A tight fade grows out and looks messy far faster than a longer scissor cut does — so "how often should I get a haircut" really depends on how short the sides are and how much contrast the style relies on.

Fades and tapers: every 2–3 weeks. The shorter and more faded the sides, the faster the line between skin and hair grows out and softens. A sharp fade starts looking blurry within two to three weeks for most hair types.

Classic and scissor cuts: every 4–6 weeks. Cuts with more length on top and a blended (not shaved) side have more room before they look unkempt. Four to six weeks is the typical window before the shape starts to lose its structure.

Longer styles: every 6–8 weeks. If you're growing length on top or wearing a looser, low-maintenance style, you can usually stretch to six or eight weeks between trims — just enough to keep split ends and shapelessness in check.

A few signs you've gone too long regardless of style: the shape around your ears and neckline has disappeared, the top is starting to overwhelm the sides, or you've caught yourself trying to "style around" hair that's grown past where the cut actually works.

The harder part for most people isn't knowing when — it's actually getting it done on schedule. A shop visit means checking hours, hoping your usual barber is working and free, and losing the better part of an hour to the round trip. That's usually where a haircut every 3 weeks quietly turns into every 6. A mobile barber removes that friction: same barber, booked at a set interval, no drive and no waiting room to talk yourself out of it.
